Operating in winds as slow as 8mph, the turbines produce no emissions, require no water, and produce no solid waste. When winds over 55 mph kick up, the blades automatically rotate out of the wind to keep from damaging the turbines. The nacelle which sits atop the tower—as big as a small bus—houses the generator that makes electricity when the blades turn. Photographers should take note of the vintage Aermotor windmill positioned below one of the giant turbines for a great photo that contrasts the old and the new. The Plains Indians and Pioneers Museum in Woodward has a beautifully restored vintage Hummer mill.
