The vintage Star windmill on the grounds just west of the museum is located next to a statue of Charles Goodnight and an early settler's cabin. Inside is a windmiller's camp, complete with chuckwagon and partially assembled 20-foot Samson mill. Tools, tower, mill parts, and all the accoutrements of the chuckwagon make this an excellent place to stop and see what went into the construction of windmills in the early part of the 20 th Century.

No place provides a better contrast between past and present applications of wind energy than twin visits to the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum and the Alternative Energy Institute. The institute's Renewable Energy Demonstration Building is powered exclusively by wind and solar energy. With a research lab and an administrative office that contains thousands of photos and information about wind energy farms around the globe, the institute has everything from educational materials for kids, curricula for teachers, to cutting-edge analytical tools for engineers.
