The Wind Trail
THE WINDMILLS THAT pumped life-giving water were a vital part of the development of the South Plains of Texas and the plains of Oklahoma.
Visitors to the American Wind Power Center in Lubbock receive a fascinating glimpse back into history with the center's 120 windmills, which date back to 1868. The glimpse is now getting broader.
Lubbock is pulling together with Plainview and Canyon along with Elk City, Norman, Woodward and Shattuck in Oklahoma to create the "Power of the Wind Trail" for tourists who want to study the history of windmills in more depth.
John Armour of the Lubbock Convention and Visitors Bureau worked with representatives of the cities that are involved to help develop the trail. The marketing efforts will include a map, a Web site and a compact disc.
Windmills have a simple beauty and a very interesting history. The Power of the Wind Trail was an inspired idea that was followed by a fine cooperative effort. It could boost tourism and attract more visitors to Lubbock and the other cities.
